A new school year!

Monday started a new routine for us. Alarm clocks were set once again and the  morning routine of getting ready for school started all over.

Monday, Wesley started his 3rd year of homeschooling. So far he is enjoying it and is enjoying the flexibility that comes with it. However, he is quickly learning that their are higher expectations that come with being in the 5th grade.

Makenzie has started her 3rd year at Bright Beginnings Academy. After 2 years  of praying diligently for a girl her age to come to Bright Beginnings, this year she has been blessed double! She is SO excited to have not one but TWO girls her age this year! Bright Beginnings is definitely growing!

Eye Surgery = cure for dyslexia????

I can't tell you how many times we have been asked over the last month if Makenzie's eye surgery will help or cure her dyslexia.  Unfortunately, this is a common misconception about dyslexia. Dyslexia is neurological, it has nothing to do with the eyes. Just because she may be switching her letters, that doesn't mean it has to do with her eyes.  I hope everyone will take a few minutes and educate themselves on dyslexia and what it is like. You might just discover a few things about yourself or someone you know! :)

Here are a few questions and misconceptions regarding dyslexia:

How do people get dyslexia?

The causes for dyslexia are neurobiological and genetic. Individuals inherit the genetic links for dyslexia. Chances are that one of the child's parents, grandparents, aunts, or uncles is dyslexic.

Is there a cure for dyslexia?

No, dyslexia is not a disease. There is no cure.

With proper diagnosis, appropriate instruction, hard work and support from family, teachers, friends, and others, individuals who are dyslexic can succeed in school and later as working adults.

Can individuals who are dyslexic learn to read?

Yes! If children who are dyslexic get effective phonological training in Kindergarten and 1st grade, they will have significantly fewer problems in learning to read at grade level than do children who are not identified or helped until 3rd grade. 74% of the children who are poor readers in 3rd grade remain poor readers in the 9th grade. Often they can't read well as adults either. It is never too late for individuals with dyslexia to learn to read, process and express information more efficiently. Research shows that programs utilizing multi-sensory structured language techniques can help children and adults learn to read.

My Pink Bubble

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Thirty-One Gifts Conference in Columbus, Ohio for the 2nd time. The first one I attended was 2 years ago in Atlanta. It was amazing! Extremely Crowded but AMAZING! This year, they split the conference up into 2 different locations- Denver and Columbus. Denver was the weekend before. Since there are well over 120K consultants, this is the only way to have a conference.

Being able to get away for a few days and be with ladies who share the same passion, desires and love that I do for our business is just what I needed. 

Spending the weekend with these 2 ladies was amazing! We laughed, talked, sang, laughed, laughed, learned from each other, laughed, do you see a trend?

While we were eating lunch on Sunday, Misty Thomas- our National Executive Director - walked by so we took advantage of the opportunity for a pic. A NED is the highest level with 31. A dream and goal!!!
